Chapter 6

Jocelyn had gotten a ride to my office, so we drove the Buick up into the low hills with their sculpted hillsides and green fairways. The houses were smaller and closer than I’d guessed they might be for a country club, but they were crowded around the course, everyone eager to be near the action.

The Country Club itself was much as I’d guessed, large white buildings with well-dressed attendants working in each. I drove past a large pool with a dozen kids playing in the waters. Jocelyn watched the younglings with a wistful look but I saw something different in the chubby dark haired kids running around. Not even one of them had golden hair or stood with straight back and confidence, neither boys nor girls in the two dozen or so that played.

Jocelyn pointed out places she had fond memories of and the tennis courts she loved to spend her mornings at. I listened to her with half an ear as I pulled into the lot and climbed out of the car. Most of my attention was on the occasional whiff of acrid, feral scent that reached me. I had to force my shoulders to relax as I led my wife up to the Club House.

The building was beautifully constructed in the lee of a small hillside. No expense had been spared on the lush greenery and flowers filling the turnabout before the large Club House. A small stand of trees stood to one side, shading part of the way in. Nothing like them grew in the area, and I knew they must have been carted in from somewhere at great expense.

The Club House had a small bar just in the double doors, along with a large patio overlooking the course and duck pond. To the right was the restaurant and Pro Shop. Jocelyn was speaking to me as my eyes scanned everything, but I barely heard her.

Since climbing free of the lake, I hadn’t been inundated with so much stimuli. It was at once overwhelming and exhilarating. Not only were there fresh sights, sounds and smells but those were all overlaid with a half dozen scents that made my hackles rise, including that feral scent I’d noticed on the girls earlier, only here it was far stronger if just as stale.

“There she is,” Jocelyn said with a bright grin, pulling me into the restaurant towards a table beneath a window, “see, didn’t I tell you she was drop dead gorgeous?”

Bailey turned and raised her hand in greeting and my stomach did a little flip-flop as I took in her incredible beauty. The woman had bright red hair and a small smattering of freckles on her nose and cheeks. Instead of detracting from her beauty, it enhanced it. Set against pale skin a wide mouth and bright green eyes, I’d never seen a more stunning creature in person.

When the young woman rose and flashed her bright white teeth in a wide grin, I found my throat going dry as the perfection of her hourglass figure revealed itself to me.
